On the World Stage, Setting Our Bearings on Bintan

The WorldSkills Competition, hailed as the “World Skills Olympics,” is organized by WorldSkills International and is currently the world’s highest-level, largest-scale, and most influential vocational skills competition. For this edition, 80 countries and regions registered to participate, with 1,385 skilled talents from 68 countries and regions competing across 64 skill competitions. The scale of participation was the largest in the history of the event, and the WorldSkills Competition was held in China in its full format for the first time.

Leveraging the WorldSkills platform, the International Exchange and Service Center of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security concurrently organized the “Belt and Road” Skills-Dream-Building Cooperation and Exchange Event, inviting representatives from advanced industrial parks, enterprises, and business associations of Belt and Road partner countries to observe the competition and visit Chinese enterprises and exemplary vocational colleges, joining together to advance skills cooperation and discuss strategies for industrial development.

As a leading high-quality alumina manufacturer in Southeast Asia, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia’s invitation to this event represents not only a valuable opportunity for industry exchange, but also authoritative recognition from the global stage—the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening its industry position, skills system, and talent development has been formally recognized as part of the global industrial landscape.

Industrial Journey, Etching the Measure of Skills

President Xi Jinping pointed out in his congratulatory message that a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is currently advancing at an accelerated pace, exerting a profound impact on the development of skills worldwide. The WorldSkills Competition closely aligns with industrial needs, providing a valuable platform for skilled talents from various countries to refine their skills and learn from one another.

Seven skill competitions made their debut at this edition of the WorldSkills Competition, with the proportion of digital and intelligent skills increasing significantly. Changes in the skill competitions reflect changes in industry. Versatile skilled talents capable of mastering digital and intelligent tools are becoming the “primary resource” that countries around the world are competing to cultivate and rapidly build up.

During the “Belt and Road” Skills-Dream-Building Cooperation and Exchange Event, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia’s industrial practices attracted widespread attention: in the Galang Batang Special Economic Zone on Bintan Island, Indonesia, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia produces high-quality metallurgical-grade alumina using the low-temperature Bayer process, has built a world-leading integrated “Port–Power–Alumina–Electrolytic Aluminium” industrial chain on reclaimed coastal land, established a modern green industrial base, and become a benchmark project for China–Indonesia capacity cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. Industrial upgrading requires talent to lead the way — today, the Galang Batang Special Economic Zone is emerging as an important industrial cluster in Indonesia.

Competition among modern enterprises has long gone beyond a simple contest of production capacity and resources, becoming a comprehensive competition in process precision, level of intelligence, and depth of skilled talent. Ultimately, the final chapter of industrial modernization must be built upon the modernization of people’s skills. Taking a high-level perspective and advancing in depth, observing the WorldSkills Competition and using it as a benchmark is precisely PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia’s long-term strategy to benchmark itself against international skills standards, draw on advanced talent development models, and fundamentally strengthen the foundation of its industrial competitiveness.

Global Vision, Deepening Local Roots

Benchmarking against international standards ultimately comes down to putting them into practice in industry. During the competition, skill competitions such as Industrial Control, Intelligent Manufacturing, and Chemical Laboratory Technology became focal points of attention—fields that closely align with the direction of the modern aluminum industry toward greater intelligence and precision.

Beyond the competition arena, there was also a classroom. The observation delegation traveled to Jiaxing, Zhejiang, to conduct on-site visits to Chinese enterprises with successful overseas operating experience and exemplary vocational colleges, while representatives from participating countries engaged in in-depth exchanges and mutual learning on “industrial collaboration and joint training of skilled talent.”

Since establishing its operations in Indonesia, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia has consistently placed the development of skilled talent in a prominent position, continuously advancing skills training for local employees and deeply integrating into regional development through initiatives such as educational support and community welfare programs. Batch after batch of Indonesian local employees have been developed into technical backbones of the modern aluminum industry, becoming a key force supporting the development of both the company and the Special Economic Zone.

Deep roots yield luxuriant leaves, and a firm foundation brings flourishing branches. From the competition arena to vocational colleges, and from observation to exchanges, the WorldSkills journey is merely the prologue. Using global standards as a mirror and international cooperation as a bridge, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia is transforming this single participation into ongoing and in-depth talent development and international benchmarking initiatives. Its focus is not only on the technological frontiers of today, but also on the direction of industry in the future.

One observation visit opens a window for benchmarking against the world; sustained dedication lays the roots for strengthening the enterprise through skills. Looking ahead, PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia will continue to deepen skilled talent development and international exchange and cooperation, enabling the理念 that “Skills Change the World, Skills Illuminate the Future” to set out from Bintan Island and bear fruit on the global stage, empowering industrial upgrading through skills, driving innovative development through talent, and contributing Bintan’s strength to the development of Indonesia’s industrial skilled talent pipeline, regional sustainable development, and the high-quality development of China–Indonesia joint efforts to build the Belt and Road.
